Year 6-7 Transition

More information about the transition from year 6 to year 7 to follow soon. Please contact the school if you have any questions, or use our enquiry form

The Transition Process

We would normally hold two transition days in July each year, which take the form of face to face meetings with form tutors, students, and their parents/carers. However, this year that has not been possible. We are currently working with the feeder primary schools to arrange Transition visits by the Year 7 Pastoral team. We also are hosting the opportunity to 'Meet your Tutor' on the 8th July from 3.30pm onwards. Information has already been sent out but if you have not received this please email Mr Bown (Head of Year 7) at bown.s@st-thomas-more.net.

Having sent out the registration booklets to all of the parents on our list, I am pleased to say that we have had most of them back, which is amazing. We are in the process of liaising with individual schools to discuss SEND requirements and Safeguarding concerns in order to allow us to better understand your child's needs prior to them starting.

Below you will find information that relates to the school uniform, starting dates and times, general term times, as well as supplementary resources to help students with the transition.

As a school, we use Google Classroom as a vehicle for delivering lessons and homework and all students have been set up with their school emails and Google Classroom log in details. We will be inviting them to join their form group, remotely, in the near future. This will give them the opportunity to interact with others in their forms prior to their start in September and we hope that this will allow them to feel welcomed into the St Thomas More community.

Message from the Head of Year

Dear Students and Parent/ Carer,

I would like to personally congratulate you on receiving your place here at St Thomas More Catholic School and Sixth Form College. I know that you have put a lot of hard work and effort into securing your place, and it is the start of an amazing 7 year-long journey that will open up opportunities that will shape the rest of your lives.

We are all looking forward to seeing you and it may seem a bit daunting starting a new school in September, the staff and the current pupils are all here to support you and make sure that it all goes as smoothly as possible. There are bound to be things that you are not sure about and we have created a video that can hopefully answer some of your questions. That being said, if you are still concerned, or if you have any other questions all you have to do is get in touch with me (bown.s@st-thomas-more.net). After the first week or so, you will have found your way around the school, you will have made new friends, and will have a good grasp on the school routine – so there is no need to worry.

In order to make this the best start to secondary school you could have, we have organised a summer school for year 6 children to come to St Thomas More site and take part in some amazing activities (rumour has it that there could be inflatables). This will take place on 9th - 13th August. If you have not already signed up to attend, please email admin@st-thomas-more.net.

We have also prepared a residential trip in the first few weeks of term to Alton Castle and Alton Towers. It’s an amazing opportunity for students to build relationships with each other, learn about God and have the awesome experience of going on the rides at Alton Towers. If you require any more information, contact me via email.

To help you settle into your new tutor group, I have created a Google Classroom that you will be invited to join along with the other students in your tutor group. Your new form tutor will be asking questions for you to answer to get to know you, and I will post some challenges and tasks to do before you join us in September. Don’t forget that I am always there to help you and support you.

Have a wonderful summer break and I’m very excited to meet you properly in September!

Sammy Bown (Head of Year 7)

School Uniform

We use the Schoolwear Centre to provide our students with their uniforms, and they have provided us with some additional information with regards to fitting and sourcing.

Students will be expected to wear their school uniforms. Should you have any issues making appointments or acquiring the uniform please let us know, so that we can help. Contact Mr. Sammy Bown (Head of Year 7) with any questions: bown.s@st-thomas-more.net

 Transition Resources and Materials

We use Google Classroom as a learning platform at St Thomas More and all new year 7 students have been set up on our system. We have some fun learning activities that your child can take part in over the summer if they wish. It will also give them the opportunity to meet other members of their form group, as well as their tutor, prior to starting.

Your child should have received their log-in details either when they attended with their primary school (MAC Feeder Schools), or when they came to the 'Meet your Tutor' event on 15th July.

If for any reason you don't have them, please get in touch with the Head of Year: bown.s@st-thomas-more.net
