There are 6 Science Laboratories which are well equipped for co-ordinated Science teaching. Science staff generally teach in the same laboratory, which also acts as their form base. Each laboratory has access to a preparation/ store room. The laboratories are all situated close to each other, 4 on the ground floor and 2 on the first floor. The main preparation room is also the base from which the technical support staff service the laboratories. Each laboratory has a networked PC and projector to assist the teachers within their lessons. One laboratory also has a suite of 15 PC’s for pupil use within lessons, giving pupils access to Science specific software and websites. Staff use ICT where possible in lessons, including the use of Data Loggers, the internet, Specialised software and video cameras.
All pupils are set targets at the start of each year and are able to monitor their progress during the year to see if they are at least matching their target grade.
The Science department works in conjunction with the Learning Support Department and has its own Teaching Assistant associated with the department, enabling pupils on the learning support register to get the extra support in lessons that are required. Pupils are set according to their ability, with each year group having less able groups being supported by a teaching assistant. Gifted and talented pupils are also earmarked and placed in groups that will enable them to fulfil their potential. Pupils are also rewarded for hard work and good behaviour by receiving merit certificates at the end of the year and postcards being sent home periodically during the year.
The Science Department also runs many enrichment activities, including:
- An Astronomy Club
- Natural History Museum and National Space Centre trips in Year7
- Brandon Marsh Fieldwork Trip in Year 8
Pupils are split into 6 ability groups. All lessons are taught in accordance with the National Curriculum requirements, enabling the pupils to gain a good Scientific knowledge and understanding, including how science works. Pupils are also able to take part in numerous practical activities, meaning their learning is reinforced through scientific investigation.
All laboratories are equipped with class sets of the relevant textbooks.
All students will study AQA GCSE Combined Science from Y9 to Y11 with a small number going on to study separate sciences in Y11. This course covers topics in all 3 science disciplines and students achieve the equivalent of 2 GCSEs from this course.

Biology Units: Cells, Organisation, Infection, Bioenergetics, Homeostasis, Inheritance, Ecology
Chemistry Units: Atomic Structure, Bonding Structure and Properties, Quantitative Chemistry, Chemical Changes, Energy Changes, Rate and Extent of Chemical Changes, Organic Chemistry, Chemical Analysis, Chemistry of the Atmosphere, Using Resources
Physics Units: Energy, Electricity, Particle Model of Matter, Atomic Structure, Forces, Waves, Magnetism and Electricity
Who would this course suit?
It is national expectation that all students study, as a minimum, the equivalent of 2 GCSE sciences and this qualification is therefore designed for all students at Key Stage 4. Those students wishing to study sciences at A Level would benefit from studying separate science GCSEs
How will I learn?
To be successful in science students need to be able to explain key scientific concepts, apply mathematical skills and work scientifically. During the course students will investigate hypotheses through practical investigations. Practical work is a key aspect of the Science GCSEs. Students will also need to explain, analyse and evaluate scientific ideas through extended writing tasks.
The Science Department is well resourced and has a number of online resources to support independent learning.
How will my work be assessed?
The work is externally assessed by terminal examinations at the end of Y11. There are no controlled assessments. Progress will be monitored by internal assessments which take place at the end of every Unit.
June (Y11): Students will sit 6 examination papers each of 1 hour and 15 minutes. There are 2 papers each for Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Each paper is worth 16.7% of the overall qualification.
How can I use this course after Year 11 in the future?
There are a wide range of progression routes for students interested in science. These include vocational qualifications in Applied Science, Forensic Science, Environmental Science, Animal Care and Engineering as well as traditional A-Level study
