The art department consists of two specialist Art teachers, Mr Case, (department head). There are two art rooms with easy access to an IT room. A wide range of different media is used in key stage 3 to give the pupils a wide range of media should they choose to carry this subject forward to GCSE level.

This includes ceramics and there  is a fully working kiln room to accommodate this. As ceramic work is used both in the lower school and for GCSE, this facility is used frequently.  The use of ICT is also included in this subject and has a computer room readily available.


In the lower school the aim of the courses are to develop the pupil’s observational skills in both drawing, painting and 3D media. 

As the pupils move through key stage 3 their projects are more challenging and are designed to encourage a more independent approach to their projects, where they learn how to design a final image and how a project may be put together.

In year seven the projects focus on the art of the Aborigines, and a ‘healthy eating’ repeated painted image in the likeness of William Morris.

In year eight, the projects consist of model making (Giacometti), cubism and Japanese prints. Year nine, having two lessons a week, pupils study advertising, ceramics, water colours and abstract pastel design.

However they also use a wide range of media that they have used in previous years together with introduction of new media. In this department key stage 3 is regarded as a good building block to prepare the pupils ability to work in detail, take their time, value their work and develop the ability to draw and paint from observation and in detail.

Home works are set in correlation with the projects and prepare them for the concept of project design that would be expected in key stage 4.


Art students will start a ‘Skills Foundation Year’ for Art in Year Nine. 

Throughout the year the projects that the students will do will be designed to fine tune their skills together with the introduction of new media.  Students will be taught how to draw from observation and be more  pro-active in their own independent work. 

The aim of the year 9 ‘Skills Foundation Year’ is for students to be better prepared for their Art GCSE and to give the students a flavour of how to produce  more independent projects.

The course for GCSE Art will start of year 10. 

Students will produce a  further ‘skills set’ project.  This will be in the form of a portraiture project  produced. They will produce work in acrylic paint, watercolour, pen and ink, pencil etc.

This painting opposite was produced in acrylic and A1 in size. (very big!)  This is a new media shown to year 10 students and encourages them to not only be more confident in their painting, but to also encourage them to work in large scale.

 Ultimately the final piece will be produced in clay in the form of a life sized clay bust.  Students will develop their sketches, the use of a variety of  media and how to research artist and ensure their work is informed by other  artists and genres etc.  

This first project is a major addition to the students’ portfolio of work as it will run until February 1/2 term.  The clay bust will be produced in one day under the guidance of our artist in residence, Mr Hirons. 

Sketches, paintings, prints,  artist and genre research etc. will all be  produced in the lessons and as for  homework.

Students will then work on their own ‘independent’  project from after  February 1/2 term onwards. 

You will be given a question paper with X7 headings and you may interpret any heading as the student wishes, and thus produce a project that clearly illustrates as to how and why you came to the final outcome.  This painting was done at the end of year 10.

 It is here where the art student needs to be organised, self motivated and focused as they will be setting their own classwork and homework.  The art student needs to find their own resources and use them effectively.

How does Y10 and year 11 work link?

In the new term in year 11 art students will then start on a new project. This is similar to the year 10 mock project, but will be better, as much would have been learned through doing their year 10 mock project.

It is advised that the student will continue to develop their year 10 mock project further so that the main year 11 mock project is as big and impressive as possible.  However if the year 10 mock project is a disaster, a new  project for the year 11 mock can be started from scratch, Then from January you start to work on your final examination project.

How will my work be assessed?

All work will be marked and assessed by your art teacher.  An external moderator will visit the school to check if all marking is accurate.

How can I use this course after Year 11/ in the future?

 Art has become so important in our world today.  Gone are the days of an art student just being able to draw and paint, they now are independent thinkers and learners, they have to be organised, creative, self motivated and pro-active in their work.  Some jobs that need art is listed below.  There are many more jobs that value art that are not listed below.

Architect, Product designer, Advertising , Marketing , Industrial designer ,  Font creator , Theatre set design,  Movie set design ,  Television program set designer ,  Graffiti artist ,  Fashion designer ,  Website designer ,  Art teacher  - and Primary school teacher ,  Other industrial designs (boats, airplanes, trains).  Interior     designer ,  Tattoo artist , Custom paint job designer for cars, bikes, etc.  , Commercial photography (for    advertising and other uses) Touch-up artist (you make the photos look prettier by working in Photoshop or other programs) ,  3D Animation,  Video Game designer,  Shop front and point of sale designers . . . . . . .  . . . . . . . . .
