KS3

At Key Stage 3 pupils are taught French in two broad ability bands and the main resource used is the Expo coursebook. Regular vocabulary tests, end of unit tests and a yearly examination testing all four national curriculum attainment targets monitor pupils’ progress and teaching sets are reviewed on a regular basis. In Year 9 all pupils undertake a taster Spanish course and this enables them to have a choice to take either French or Spanish (or both) for GCSE.

Why choose A GCSE: Modern Languages - French

Learning any language helps you broaden your understanding of people from other cultures, nationalities and walks of life.  It is not simply learning the language either, for example you  may learn what music people in that country enjoy, what food they like to eat, what traditions they have, how they celebrate festivals.  Not only that but learning a language increases your brain’s capacity and improves your memory.  It is a real achievement that will be the envy of your friends and that employers will love.

Who would this course suit? Languages suit learners of all abilities.  You may choose to continue with GCSE French, and this suits students who have shown an excellent work ethic in French so far and a genuine aptitude for learning a language.  Please ask your teacher for further guidance.

How will I learn? What skills will I develop through learning a language?

Learning a language is not simply about communicating in a foreign language.  You will develop a wide range of skills :

  • communication skills-being able to speak to people from  all different walks of life            
  • report writing – being concise, working as part of a team
  • mental agility - learning to think on your feet and problem solving   
  • presentation skills – improving your self confidence
  • verbal and written accuracy                                                              
  • listening skills
  • cultural awareness     
  • creativity        

How will my work be assessed? 100% Externally Assessed Full Linear Examination No Coursework or Controlled Assessment         

Listening  25% Foundation/Higher tier Listen to spoken French and answer questions.  Speaking  25% Foundation/Higher tier candidate speaks in French.  A role play, questions on a stimulus, a conversation based on two themes. Foundation 7 – 9 minutes. Higher 10 – 12 minutes. Reading  25% Foundation/Higher tier  Read French and answer questions, including a translation passage from French to English.  Writing  25% Foundation/Higher tier candidate writes in French.  Foundation – Three open response questions and one translation into French. Higher – Two open response questions and one translation into French.

Themes and Topics?

Identity and Culture   Who Am I?  -  Relationships, when I was younger, what my friends and family are like, what makes a good friend, interests, socialising with friends and family, role models. Daily Life – Customs and everyday life, food and drink, shopping, social media and technology/use of, advantages and disadvantages. Cultural Life – Celebrations and festivals, reading, music, sport, film and television.

Local Area, Holiday and Travel Holidays – preferences, experiences, destinations.  Travel and Tourist Transactions – Travel and accommodation, asking for help and dealing with problems, directions, eating out, shopping.  Tours, Region and Country – Weather, places to see, things to do.

School  -What School is Like – School types, school day, subjects, rules and pressures, celebrating success. School Activities – School trips, events and exchanges.

Future Aspirations, Study and Work   Using Languages Beyond the Classroom – Forming relationships, travel, employment. Ambitions – Further study, volunteering, training. Work – Jobs, careers and professions.

International and Global Dimension   Bringing the World Together – Sports events, music events, campaigns and good causes. Environmental Issues – Being green, access to natural resources.

How can I use this course after Year 11/ in the future?

Being able to communicate in a foreign language is a valuable talent that’s applicable to almost everything you do - so, it's quite a handy subject really. Languages can be helpful in practically any job, from a personal assistant to an engineer, whether it is based in the UK or abroad.  Many employers reward people with language skills with extra salary because they know they are useful in today’s international business world.  Jobs involving languages also have many attractive features such as, placements abroad, flexible working hours and opportunities for promotion and new responsibilities.

It’s a multi-lingual world – 94% of the world does not speak English as their first language.  Languages give you a sense of achievement.  Even if you make mistakes you can talk to someone in a different language.   There’s a great big world out there waiting for you!

It is possible to take both French and Spanish by selecting both in different option blocks.
