St Thomas More School & Sixth Form College Website
Continuing the theme of commenting on various aspects of school life that have an important impact on pupils including homework, uniform and attendance, this week I would like to comment on school governance. This area of school life is being given increasing prominence in the educational world and this school is blessed with a very committed team of people who bring a wide range of skills and life-experience to the strategic direction of the school. They devote many hours to the good of the pupils and are very generous in their support which is given on a voluntary basis. They take a keen interest in general and specific issues and visit the school regularly in terms of awards ceremonies and even more direct ways such as mentoring individual pupils . I am a great believer in the principle that the whole community educates a child and their wisdom and expertise is much appreciated.
I was pleased to note at last night’s sixth form parents evening the positive signs about the progress of year 12 and 13. The latter are already planning seriously their university destinations and their varied but specific dreams are beginning to take shape, dependent, of course, on their results. Year 12 are rising to the challenge of their AS courses.
In my assembly to year 11 yesterday I emphasised the importance of resilience and not giving up when things seem difficult and that errors should be seen as opportunities for learning. It is also very important for year 11 pupils and parents to understand that good performance across all their subjects, not just the ones they wish to pursue next year, is very important because their average score is taken into account in entrance criteria post-16.
There will be no newsletter next Friday so I hope you all enjoy to valuable family time together during the half-term holiday.
St Thomas More School is committed to safeguarding and the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment
