St Thomas More School & Sixth Form College Website
Dear Parents and Carers,
The shorter week for pupils passed very quickly indeed and the pace of work in the school was arguably more intense than usual.
The dramatic scenes from Paris over the weekend had captured the interest of the whole student body in a manner which was not quite as stark as epoch defining moments such as the death of President Kennedy in 1963 or the attack on the World Trade Centre in 2001 (14 years already!) but the strong visual content of the images in this new era of social media certainly reached a very wide audience very quickly.
The school respected the Europe-wide minute’s silence on Monday. I am sometimes reluctant to try to live out in school everything which happens outside because I feel that we should also be a safe haven for the pupils from anything which might detract from learning. But these issues touch us all and we have a significant duty to play our part in helping the children to understand the complex world in which they will soon be participating as leaders and decision-makers. Our Catholic duty is to play a full part in the society in which we live.
Year 8 pupils watched a drama from an outside group to support the local authority’s work on safe-guarding. The very serious theme was Child Sexual Exploitation and their response was suitably mature. We have to help in every way possible our children to be aware of the dangers facing them in the digital age.
Yesterday evening was the Prize-Giving ceremony for year 11 from last year and as ever it was a lovely evening where the pride we feel at the students’ success can be expressed publicly. Past pupil Anna Goodridge who has made a career in national television was the guest of honour and spoke with feeling about the importance of ambition, following your dream, the preparation the school gives the students to do so and the importance of parental support.
Next Wednesday is our Sixth Form Open Evening which is tremendously important to us all.
I wish you all a pleasant weekend.
St Thomas More School is committed to safeguarding and the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment
