St Thomas More School & Sixth Form College Website
I am writing this newsletter as the praise heaped on your children who have participated in Open Evening is ringing in my ears. It is wonderful to see their enthusiasm in meeting prospective pupils and parents but it is particularly heartening when people mention how well they speak and explain things and how they are models of politeness. The evening was very well attended and I am grateful to Mr Burton who is responsible for transition and to the staff for having put so much effort into the evening.
I have mentioned areas of school life recently in which we are trying to make improvements or be more consistent, namely uniform and attendance. I am delighted to report that there have been tangible improvements in both these areas. This week I would like to mention homework which can be a source of stress and worry at home.
Having a good and consistent approach to homework is, in my view, very important to the long term success of pupils. It is important that they develop good independent study habits which are needed at secondary school, especially in an era where exams are being made more difficult. We try to ensure that they receive regular amounts which advance their learning and develop their skills while still leaving time for out of school activities. When you are checking their homework it really helps if you ask them occasionally to talk about what they have learned since that will give an indication about how much has really sunk in and whether a bit more time might be required. You do not need to be an expert in the subject but you will pick up a feel for how solid they seem to be in their learning.
I would like to wish a pleasant time to the Year 12 students who are going on a team building exercise to Oakerwood. Previous groups have thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
I wish you all a pleasant weekend.
